Every day, medical imaging technology saves lives. As technology advances and medical equipment becomes widely used and increasingly precise, it is well recognized in the medical and scientific communities that ionizing radiation exposure still have drawbacks. When ionizing radiation interacts with cells, it can cause damage to both the cells and their genetic material. If this damage isn’t properly repaired, it can lead to cell death or potentially harmful changes in DNA (mutations).

The National Research Council’s Committee to Assess Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation reviewed available data and concluded that the risk of cancer continues linearly at low doses. This conclusion suggests that there may be no safe dose level, and even low doses of radiation have the potential to slightly increase the risk of cancer. Radiation protection standards operate on the assumption that any radiation dose carries some risk, the risk is dose dependant and the impact is cumulative.
